Hither Hills State Park
1. In Town- (Hank Zaborski Memorial Field) on Edgemere Road. You cannot miss this playground if you’ve driven around Montauk town as it is centrally located right across from the movie theater and next to the Softball field. It is best for 3 yrs and up but you can certainly entertain your toddler with a lot of supervision. The big kids enjoy it too. There are public bathrooms right there as well. If you get hungry or thirsty, Primavera Pizza and St. Peter’s Catch are right across the street.
2. Hither Hills State Park- What a great playground! There are two separate play areas built for the younger and older kids, a climbing wall, a tether ball and other sand toys. This playground is part sand and part rubber mat. There are bathrooms and best of all you are right on an expansive beach. Take Old Montauk Highway about 1 mile passed Gurney’s heading west on the ocean side. Parking during the season is $8.00 but look for the first parking lot where parking is free. It will be a little walk from there.
3. The Montauk Public School- Newly renovated with lots to play on, this playground also has a safe recycled rubber crumb ground. The “spider man web” rope climb is the main attraction for the older kids. There are also traditional swings, slides as well rock climb walls, see-saws, and other great play things. Down side- there are no public bathrooms available. Just one porta-lav. This playground is open to the public after school hours.
4. At the Lighthouse- right in the parking area ($6 in season), this playground is a bit older but still keeps the kids smiling. Swings, slides a see-saw and sand toys. While you’re there, you can take advantage of the Lighthouse Museum, gift shop and surrounding trails and beaches.
5. At St. Therese School- this is right on main street but far off the road so you do not have to worry about your children running onto Main. This playground is associated with the nursery school and is more suited for children of that age.
