When you say the word “Ditch” in Montauk most people know exactly what you are talking about. Ditch Plains Beach, just 2 miles east of town, hosts arguably one of the best accessible surf spots on the East Coast. Loved by locals and visitors alike who share the commonality of great waves, wide sandy beaches, coastal cliff views and community, Ditch has become “The Hot Spot”.
One of our favorite morning activities is to head down to Ditch with the girls, get some breakfast and a coffee at the Ditch Witch, hang by the bench and then wander down to the surf. It’s the perfect spot to always find a play date for your little ones. Swimming in this area is prohibited, however, so if that’s what you have in mind, head west from here or park in the first lot. The first lot is where you’ll also find bathrooms. The lots fill up early so get on your go.
If you prefer to explore a bit, find the trail to the right of the first lot and hike your way along the cliffs into Shadmore Park. For the even more adventurous with appropriate footwear, walk east of the third lot, the “dirt lot” to find the tidal pools at low tide.
If you missed the day, make your night. There’s a good chance you’ll find bonfires and aerial displays at Ditch.
