| The weekend after Labor Day Weekend is always a good one to connect back in with the things many of us enjoy about Montauk- the abundance of hiking trails and parks. The Walking Dunes will enliven your sense of adventure and curiosity while providing your children with a natural playground! When heading West from Montauk, take a right after Cyril’s on to Napeague Harbor Road at the Tennis Courts, drive all the way down to the end and park on the right. You’ll find a trail head sign for the “Walking Dunes”. From there on you will embark on a trip through time. The Walking Dunes have moved themselves through time shifting at the whim of the prevailing winds. Their progression covers natural habitat on there slow motion journey. As they progress and pass the forming swale area typically reveals the once covered habitat in a frozen or fossilized state. The hike is a walk through time and it is fun for the kids and adults alike. This is a lengthy hike which brings you through a loop that ends in a marshy bog off Nappeage Harbor that gives you the beginning of a estuarial lifestyle. Cranberries and blackberries may be abundant depending on the time of season. Pick at will for a great treat after your hike. |
