Fashion In The Sand- Shoe Inn Sale

Thursday, August 25th, 2011
OMG!!! It is the SHOE SALE! HURRY! I think I have some space to put a few more pairs. Hmmmmm what do I need. Need?!&^$@$#@ I WANT more shoes. Always. Guess what? You too can get more shoes for cheap at the Shoe-In shoe sale in Amagansett at the American Legion. It’s right across the highway from Brent’s Deli. I am sure you have seen the huge poster hung up on the fence. I can’t tell you how many pairs of great shoes I have bought there. It is definitely something I look forward to every summer. If you are around into next week wait and go Monday the 22nd. They will have BOOTS and HANDBAGS!
I have a few shopping tips:
- Do NOT take your kids. Shoes require all your attention. It is very tight between all the tables filled with shoes. You can’t be chasing kids and shoes.
- Buy your size! Don’t think the shoes will stretch. They never do. All you get is vicious blisters. Your feet will not grow into them either like your kids.
- Do not buy the crazy pink polka dot feather embellished shoes that you may wear next summer – you won’t.
- If you never wear heels you are not going to start now.
- If you never wear flats you should start. Especially if you have kids.
- If you see a basic pump that will go with everything and you do not have a good basic pump BUY THEM! They won’t go bad.
- If you see your favorite shoes in brown that you already wear to death in black BUY THEM!
- Don’t hyper ventilate. In through the nose out through the mouth.
Have fun shopping.

Fashion in the Sand for Montauk!

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011
What better garment to wear then one that shows you support a GREAT cause. Our cause here in Montauk is our Community Center or The Play House as we call it. So far we have a day care for our little ones AND a senior center for the older members of our community. We hope to soon have a pool and a theater. This is where the T-shirts come in and all the other great events at the Play House this summer.
We designed these T-shirts last summer to try to raise awareness of our center. They come in adult and kids sizes. I drew the house! So you really need to buy one. Can you imagine what it would be like to be able to swim year round?! Inside no less!! No more dry suits in the middle of winter. Just a sleek bathing suit under a stylish cover up. We could have a swim team! A swim team has a uniform! More great things to wear. A team Montauk swim suit! Could you just imagine?! What do you think the name of our team would be? JAWS? GREAT WHITE? TIDAL WAVES? I think I need help with a name. We also need help with a donation. THANK YOU!

The American Girl
I not only make sure you all look great, I make sure your dolls look great too. If you forgot to pack your doll’s out to dinner frock or even her crocs for strolling town – no worries! Pop into Willow, next to Fudge n’ Stuff, where you will find a HUGE selection of all the latest trendy styles for your American Girl Doll. You can even find an “I Love Monatuk” t-shirt for her so she too can have fond memories of our little town. The shoe assortment blew my mind. Crocs, fuzzy bunny slippers, snappy strappy sandals, and even rain boots. Makes you wish you were 18″ tall too. (A whole lot cheaper to dress yourself in doll clothes than real life sizes).

Fashion in the Sand- Get Bookish

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

What better accessory than a REAL book. It will age beautifully. It will always be a reminder of your summer in Montauk. It will look so chic on your coffee table.
The 4th has past and now we are in the true lazy hazy days of summer. What better accessory to carry with you than a book. (Especially since clear hand bags are in style everyone can see how bookish you really are.)Now I do not mean some trashy romance novela found in the super market on a wire spinning rack. I mean a real hard cover with a beautiful dust jacket that you possibly bought just because the picture on the front caught your eye, like a box of candies in a special box just calling your name. You can practically taste how deliciously entranced you will be by the characters waiting inside to be your long lost friends. I have just the treat shop for you to go to. It is the Montauk Bookshop on the circle just 2 doors down from the Bakery. It is slightly set back from the side walk. A beautiful rose garden in front lovingly tended by the land lord. The new owner of this wonderful shop has the same name as I, Perry! But the boys’ spelling of course since he is a boy, well, man. So the shop must be good just based on that alone. ha.

Check Out the Salt Box

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Continuing with my crazy retro ideas there is a NEW shop in Montauk called The Salt Box. It is on the same block as Naturally Good, Continental Market and around the corner form Joni’s. I am telling you all this so you know it is in GOOD company. You can shop and eat healthy after – so no guilt. Back to the retro idea. The Salt Box makes screen printed t-shirts for kids and adults. Real OLD FASHIONED screen printing! You can find Tony down stairs in the basement of Salt Box working on silk screens. Just like I learned in high school. They make the screens by hand and push the paint around by hand. No computers doing it for them. Kat is upstairs and can help you find what you are looking for. As well as t-shirts they have a very cool assortment of gifts that are all easy to carry home or great hostess gifts. Such HAND blown water glasses that are thick and sturdy and feel wonderful to hold (You can put a cocktail in them too after 5pm). Please make this shop a definite go see during your stay in Montauk.

Fashion in the Sand Visits “Share With”

Hmmmm… Bell bottoms, now clogs, summer of luuuuvvvvvvv… I must be feelin’ it. I have had enough war, hatred, impolite people, rushing around. I am wearing my clogs and bell bottom and wearing my hair long and free with daisies stuck in here and there. Lettin’ my freak flag fly! So while my flag is flyin’ high I will shop ’til I drop in my CLOGS! I love my clogs. They are perfect for Montauk. You can walk in sand, gravel, rubber chips in playgrounds, through shallow puddles, and on pavement. Kick them off in a moment for an impromptu walk on the beach. Surprisingly people have forgotten that clogs were so hot in the ’70′s. Clogs and Candies. I thought they would change my life if could just wear clogs and Candies every day. And a tube top. Specifically a WHITE tube top and a thin gold belt. Of course I was a pre-teen and did not have to worry about the tube top holding up my boobs. But I digress… You can wear socks or go sockless. They span all seasons. They are a good investment! Tell this to your husband when you get questioned down about needing more shoes. These clogs pictured here are from Share With on Main Street in Montauk. Not too many places have really good clogs with a proper curve to the arch so shop carefully.

Fashion In The Sand ~ School Days School Days Good Old Fashion Rule Days

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010
I wish it were “old fashion” rule days at least for clothing. What happened to uniforms? I LOVE UNIFORMS. Who ever says uniforms are more expensive is not very informed. There is no fight every morning, no decisions, just get up and get dressed in your UNIFORM. This jumper that the girls are holding is their uniform from their winter school. As much as they tell you they don’t like uniforms when you ask I have never heard one complaint when they actually get dressed in it. I love seeing all the kids neat and tidy at school. They are all equal and they too enjoy being dressed the same as far as I can tell. I grew up wearing a uniform and never really had an issue with it. I wore my kilt short and my shirt over sized as my own personal statement(It was the early 80′s)
However since we DON”T wear uniforms here in Montauk may I suggest a “uniform”. My girls always wear a dress and leggings or skirts and leggings. Toby likes a fancier dress and Ruby likes a knit dress. There will be NO bare shoulders, NO short skirts with bare legs, NO fake leather leggings, NO ripped jeans, NO flip flops…catch my drift?
Kids should be taught to be proud of their appearance. To know what is appropriate dress for school. It is school after all, not the beach, not the weekend. Remember when it was actually RUDE to wear a hat inside or to let your underwear show?
What is this world coming to?

Fashion in the Sand ~ Hurricane Season

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
Well folks after a gorgeous hot summer what else is there to expect? How about some one named Earl? Yup, the ocean is WARM inviting hurricanes to come on up and pay a visit to our shores. Sorry to say this hurricane Earl is going to drop in at a very inconvenient time – Labor Day weekend. No matter, rain, floods, wind… you can at least be dressed for it. I recommend a cute trench and brand new Wellies in a happy color to keep you smiling. I know, I know, Wellies are hardly new news but each season Hunter puts out great new colors. This Tiffany box blue is my favorite. They also come with fleece liners so your toes stay toasty even in winter. You can find Hunter wellies $125.00 on line at many sites or you can go over to Shoe In in East Hampton on New Town Lane. They sell the liners too for $25.
As for trench coats I have seen great ones at H&M and Forever 21! They are short and belted and very stylish. Some have wide sleeves to put a more romantic spin. One style at Made Well in East Hampton also on New Town Lane has a biker jacket asymmetrical zipper! So cute. Make sure you buy your trench a little large so you can fit a sweater under it in fall. It is an article of clothing no one should be with out. Even though it feels like it has not rained in forever it surely will rain soon. May as well be prepared and turn heads doing it.
Stay Dry-

Fashion In The Sand~ SALE Time!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

It is summer sale time! That bathing suit you have been wanting all year is finally more affordable! Don’t waist time, BUY IT! Well try it on first and then buy it. You are all tan and looking beach ready so now is a great time to buy some new sumer pieces and store them for next year. Put them away so when you are wanting to buy something new at full price next spring you will all ready have a little stash of brand new pieces that have been waiting for you all winter long. Even better, buy it now for your winter vacation. I always love to shop sales. I think of it as wise spending. I do the same for the kids and my husband. I know we will be away in a warm place this winter and I know I will want something new. Buying now saves money later. The same as if when you shop and you don’t get a proper bag and shove the item wrapped in tissue in your handbag it is not like shopping at all. You are allowed to come home and tell your husband “But it was 60% off!” So can can walk in the house with the shopping bag announcing to the world you did spend  just a little money. On line has some of the best sales going on now too. J.Crew has great bathing suits for girls. I stocked up on 5 new suits and a dress all for $94!!!! Gap, Old Navy, Children’s Place, Boden, Garnet Hill, Hanna Anderson… The online list is long.
In Montauk I like to shop at Kai Lani right next to Sangha Yoga for lots of great basics. They also have the BEST vegan leather look handbags. Calypso too has some amazing deals from time to time. I always shop their sale rack. A new cashmere sweater always makes a girl happy especially when it is HALF price.
Happy Hunting

Fashion in the Sand- Hot, Africa Hot

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

How about we forget about clothes all together for the time being. I can not even think about putting something on only for it to get drenched in sweat 5 minutes later. A nice nudist colony might do well just about now. I don’t know if Montauk could handle that. Hmmmm, the next best thing is a bikini and a beach chair half way in the water,a cold drink in your hand, and your child holding a palm frond over your head. I made 2 huge containers of iced tea, one mint and one black. Quite nice to have ready and waiting for you in the frig. I was walking around with a high ball filled with iced tea and someone thought I had whiskey on the rocks. Mama’s not that bad off at the moment. Good gracious this weather is uninspiring. The fashion magazines are all showing fall looks now. I get hot just looking at pictures of jeans and sweaters. You know all the summer clothing is going on sale. Maybe some new bathing suits? I know! New bathing suits for the kids. At least they still want to run around. I dragged my butt over to Air and Speed hoping to feel the air speeding past me like wind. It worked. I found very cute bikinis and matching surf shorts for your young lady and rad surf short and Ts for your dude. While you are there sign the kids up for Surf Camp so they can hang ten before you know it. You can also pick up that beach chair that you will be sitting in in the water with your cold drink and palm frond.
Keepin’ it cool-
