Fashion In The Sand- Fall Is Here!!-Well, In Stores That Is

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010
YEAH! New stuff to buy in stores NOW! I love when the new season hits shops. The clothing is for exactly the opposite of the current weather. It takes a really skilled shopper to know what to spend her money on this early in the game. However the old adage “Snooze you lose” really holds true for select fashion items. With this heat I can not even imagine trying on a cashmere sweater as beautiful, soft, and dreamy as it may be. I hope all the shops with fall merchandise are keeping their A.C.s on SUPER COOL to entice shoppers.

Fashion in the Sand~ Give Good Gift.

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

I love to select gifts. I make sure it is something that I would want. Actually more than just want, more like covet. Then I wrap it up in beautiful paper with beautiful ribbon so the receiver can not wait to get at it and I am reluctant to give it up.

Giving good gift is a talent. It reflects the giver, that she knows the receiver well enough to carefully select something that will be appreciated and used. Giving good gift requires time and thought and good shopping skills. The Carriage House in the center of town on the South side of 27 has a gift fit for every one, especially babies and kids. There are the most adorable onesies made of cool white cotton, perfect for a hot summer day for your precious baby. Plush animals, towels, rain boots, PIRATE DRESS UP!!!, unicorns, ponies, art supplies, books and more. Each thing my eyes find is better than the next. I feel as if I am in Good Gift Heaven. If you see a Good Gift but don’t have a receiver BUY IT ANYWAY and put it aside. You will have a party to go to in no time and you may already have your Good Gift hidden away in your special closet (that your kids already know about).
Happy Shopping

Fashion In The Sand- “The Mommy Romper”

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

I have 2 girls and often I think the world would be a better place if we all could just wear a Tutu once in a while. Like SJP. Instead of a Tutu maybe a romper. A little more socially acceptable.(However Kelly B. has THE BEST TUTU DRESS EVER if you are in the market.) A romper is a one piece with legs and a top all together. You have to step into it and pull it up. Yes, going to the bathroom means you must disrobe, but we are all slaves to fashion at some time or another. A romper is great because it IS one garment. No matching tops and bottoms. It travels well in a beach bag. You can become instantly dressed if you are in your bathing suit and want coverage to go into town.

There are more sophisticated rompers called jump suits, typically with a long bottom half – see photo. Very 70′s chic. Goes well with a high wedge at night. The cork wedge you all should have bought at Kaikai. Again VERY easy dressing, very effortless, very beachy. You are at the beach so live it up! Go have a romp at one of the many Montauk night spots in your fabulous romper.

Fashion in the Sand~ Going Back Again

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Do you remember wearing Clark’s Wallabees in grade school? There were always a few kids with them. Kind of nerdy. Then Hush Puppies came along. I think Hush Puppies are actually Wallabee knock offs. Who’da thought. Well, Clarks are back with a whole new look for women (The same oldy but goody Wallabees are still available- you can get them for your husband! Now they are considered SEXY) They are offering very sexy and VERY COMFORTABLE cork wedges with soft suede straps. So cool, so effortlessly chic. Best of all play ground appropriate!

My friend, Michele, sported a pair to school while dropping of her son. She had on a plaid mini skirt with these sandals. A whole lot of moms were looking at her feet asking about her shoes. They looked great. Perfect for Montauk. Dressed but not out of place. She showed up again at pick up that afternoon and said she had not taken them off all day, can you imagine staying in heals all day!? Very comfy. Go with everything. If you have to / want to buy a pair of sandals, buy these! Since they are sold over at Gosman’s you can bring the kids and set them up with ice cream while you get shoes. Shoes AND ice cream – does life get any better?

Fashion in the Sand-Beachy Bedrooms

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

As usual I was walking around town being a tourist taking in all the new retail spaces in Montauk. There is so much to look at and BUY this season! I have been wanting to update my younger daughter’s room. Typical of being a second child close behind the first I never really had time to decorate her room. The rug is from the living room, the pictures on the wall are moved around from other places in the house, and the paint was never refreshed. She keeps asking for a rainbow sparkle with hearts paint job. Sounds like a bad trip paint job to me.

As I was walking around, I came to Gansett Lane. This is their second season in Montauk. It is a wonderful home shop filled with all sorts of decorating pieces from gorgeous couches to VERY AFFORDABLE water goblets. There is quite an extensive section for kids. I immediately saw the remedy to my daughter’s blah room! A new woven cotton rug in pale aqua and lavender stripes! The best was it was only about $200 for a 6×9 rug. This is a steal for such a large rug. I quickly purchased it, brought it home, and put it down in place of the old one. WOW! What a wonderful difference. It made the room bright, fresh, and so beachy. We all love it. She did say that she was expecting a new paint job when I told her to go see the surprise in her room. Oh, well. Such is life with Little Ones!

Fashion In The Sand: Be Aware of What You Wear!

Clothing with a Conscience

I recently got to watch HBO’s special “From Rags To Riches To Rags”. Did you know that in the 1970′s about 95% of ALL THE CLOTHES sold in the USA were MADE in the USA!! Do you remember that commercial on TV with the ladies singing “Look for the union label…” .What happened to the union label? (more…)

Fashion in the Sand- Return of the 80′s

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Yup, who would have thought an era I grew up in would be considered vintage now. And a really awful fashion era at that, the 80′s. Big hair, neon colors, shoulder pads, cut up sweatshirts, jazz shoes, Ray Bans. Some of these things are coming back around quite strong and I see teenagers thinking “OOOOH how cool”. I’m thinking “Not again”. But when you can’t beat ‘em…you may as well join them wearing the best of what is being offered.

I love the neon nail polish by Essie. On toes ONLY! A neon colored belt in leather or webbing. I have found them in all widths. My two faves are a skinny from J.Crew and a wider from American Eagle Outfitters. Also a watch can add a flash of color. Yellow watch by Nixon at Air and Speed surf shop in Montauk. Of course stripes are every where. If you wear your stripes in black and white it is more 80′s punk. Especially with a pair of black Converse sneakers, thank you Joey Ramone.

Did I spell that right? I took Spanish not French.

This weather has been a GIFT! Can you believe how great you feel with a little sun shine?! I was feeling down, drab, and cold. But now with the sun and the unseasonably high temps I can kick up my heals and get out to the playground. I know that is not what you were expecting me to say but this is Kid Montauk, and I do have kids. Wild and tireless ones at that. So off we go after school hopefully every day this week to enjoy the fresh air. I will try my best to be fashionable while doing it.
To show my exuberance I quickly tied a small leopard kerchief around my neck just incase of a chill. I looked in the mirror and WOW what a difference a small detail makes. From normal mom to Fabulous French Possibly Naughty Mom. I like it. I also like that this bit of fabric is just that, a bit. It is small and inexpensive but looks like so much more. You can use almost anything: a bandana, a pretty cloth napkin with a fetching floral print, a piece of fabric cut into a square and frayed a bit around the edges. Stop by any one of our great second hand treasure shops and riffle through the scarf bin. You will definitely come up with something that catches your eye. Tie it around your neck and instantly feel that certain insouciance, that Audrey Hepburn coquettishness.
Have fun!

Fashion In The Sand – Hmmmmmm

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

I have not been feeling very fashionable with this weather. It’s warm, then it’s freezing, then warm and very windy with chance of drizzle. YUCK basically. So to combat my woes I was thinking about wearing some lipstick. Since Halloween is around the corner this might be either a good or terrible decision.
Most moms in Montauk do not wear a stitch of make up. If they do it is done very well and I don’t notice. However when a friend, who usually is barefaced,  does don some makeup I notice immediately. This is neither good nor bad just really noticeable. I do prefer a clean face. Every one I know has very lovely skin. It must be the humid sea air. So a little shot of bright lipstick can either look fun or like you are trying out your costume early. I would have to say you must wear your lip stick regularly so everyone gets used to your new look.
Last Halloween I had my hair down and dark red lipstick and people did not recognize me. Oh, it must be the lipstick. I think a darker gloss or stain to start out with on a daily basis. Just a darker natural lip, as if you bit your lip. I love the new lip stains that are available in drugstores, Maybeline, Neutragena to name a few. They are sheer but offer matt color that wont come off on your child’s face. Your lips but better. Then as people get used to you with a darker pout they won’t be so shocked when you try out the bright berry red (or think you are in costume).

Fashion in the Sand- “Shop” for free!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

I was East Hampton the other day and was watching people walking around. People watching is a favorite sport of mine. It requires very little equipment, can be done with a coffee or other beverage in hand, and best of all is FREE. Sometimes I really want to shop for real with spending money and all that but I just can not afford it at that moment. So the next best thing is to go help a friend shop with her money. If there is no one around that wants to spend their money then the third best thing is to people watch. I get wonderful ideas watching what other people wear. Not just women. There are plenty of very fashionable men in EH.

I saw a woman from the back and she had the most wonderful colors or pale peach to beige. Wow, I have those colors at home but never thought to put them together like that. Her scarf was flowing behind her and she looked so cool. Another woman I saw had on this leopard print scarf but it was just peaking our from her dark grey sweater. Just a little hint. Her jeans were perfectly old, I don’t remember her shoes…but she too looked awesome. OOH, IDEAS ARE FLOWING! The last girl I really took notice of had on tight jeans, a tight navy checkered shirt and really cool riding inspired boots. Hmmm I can do something like that too.

Off home I went feeling like I just bought bags of clothes but spent absolutely nothing but my time (which is precious in itself). I went straight to my closet and pulled stuff out to style. There was no need to buy anything! I could have a new look just by looking at people. Using their fashion sense and making it my own. Thanks to all those unknowing people in EH! So much better than window shopping. Real people wearing clothes instead of mannequins in windows.

Another very interesting way to see style is checking out the host of style blogs that are popping up. My absolute favorite is http://www.thesartorialist.com I always get a new idea.
