Fashion In The Sand ~ School Days School Days Good Old Fashion Rule Days

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010
I wish it were “old fashion” rule days at least for clothing. What happened to uniforms? I LOVE UNIFORMS. Who ever says uniforms are more expensive is not very informed. There is no fight every morning, no decisions, just get up and get dressed in your UNIFORM. This jumper that the girls are holding is their uniform from their winter school. As much as they tell you they don’t like uniforms when you ask I have never heard one complaint when they actually get dressed in it. I love seeing all the kids neat and tidy at school. They are all equal and they too enjoy being dressed the same as far as I can tell. I grew up wearing a uniform and never really had an issue with it. I wore my kilt short and my shirt over sized as my own personal statement(It was the early 80’s)
However since we DON”T wear uniforms here in Montauk may I suggest a “uniform”. My girls always wear a dress and leggings or skirts and leggings. Toby likes a fancier dress and Ruby likes a knit dress. There will be NO bare shoulders, NO short skirts with bare legs, NO fake leather leggings, NO ripped jeans, NO flip flops…catch my drift?
Kids should be taught to be proud of their appearance. To know what is appropriate dress for school. It is school after all, not the beach, not the weekend. Remember when it was actually RUDE to wear a hat inside or to let your underwear show?
What is this world coming to?

Happy Labor Day to You!

Monday, September 6th, 2010

This transitional day marks an end to the hottest summer on record and a very busy season in Montauk.  Our thoughts as parents are leaning towards the school days ahead but what a great day to stay in the present! Whether  you are at the beach, a pool, on a boat or taking down time somewhere else savor this sunny, gentle day.

7 Things To Do in Montauk during Hurricane Earl

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

www.Surfline.com

Well, we’re hoping that Earl stays 100 miles off the coast of Montauk and if that’s the case, you’ll just need to plan for Rainy Day Activities.  Here’s some things to do:

1-Watch the storm!  Listen to the news to see if it is safe to head outdoors.  The beaches will be wild but stay away during high tides when they’re predicting the water will be at the dunes- Friday 5:20, Saturday 5:41 am and 6:15 pm.  Stay away from heavily wooded areas.

2-Bring the Kids to the Montauk Yacht Club for Surf Craft on Friday from 10-2 and 5-7 pm.  You can schedule a massage, dine or head for the bar.

3- Go to Rick’s Crabby Cowboy Cafe for Rainy Day Bingo in the afternoon.  Call to make sure they’re open.

4- Go to Captain Kid Toys or one of the stores in town for crafts, puzzles, books and games and hunker down inside.

5- Go to the Montauk Community Center to play in the Gym.

6- Spend a little time in the Montauk Library and read up on the history of Montauk.  Make it a game with the kids!

7- If it’s too scary to venture out to a restaurant, get some of your Montauk faves to go and have an indoor Lobster and Clam Bake!

Fashion in the Sand ~ Hurricane Season

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010
Well folks after a gorgeous hot summer what else is there to expect? How about some one named Earl? Yup, the ocean is WARM inviting hurricanes to come on up and pay a visit to our shores. Sorry to say this hurricane Earl is going to drop in at a very inconvenient time – Labor Day weekend. No matter, rain, floods, wind… you can at least be dressed for it. I recommend a cute trench and brand new Wellies in a happy color to keep you smiling. I know, I know, Wellies are hardly new news but each season Hunter puts out great new colors. This Tiffany box blue is my favorite. They also come with fleece liners so your toes stay toasty even in winter. You can find Hunter wellies $125.00 on line at many sites or you can go over to Shoe In in East Hampton on New Town Lane. They sell the liners too for $25.
As for trench coats I have seen great ones at H&M and Forever 21! They are short and belted and very stylish. Some have wide sleeves to put a more romantic spin. One style at Made Well in East Hampton also on New Town Lane has a biker jacket asymmetrical zipper! So cute. Make sure you buy your trench a little large so you can fit a sweater under it in fall. It is an article of clothing no one should be with out. Even though it feels like it has not rained in forever it surely will rain soon. May as well be prepared and turn heads doing it.

“Tend to Your Garden” ~A Tribute

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

This is a tribute to my father, Clifford E. Bowen Jr, who passed away just two days ago after a very long battle with Acute Leukemia.  I had the privilege to be by his side and with him before he embarked on his new journey.  My father was my teacher, confidant and friend.  He gave me more gifts than I would ever expect from a parent.  He was an extraordinary  man but his gift of understanding the human condition and giving good advice and guidance was his strength.  He was also an excellent athlete, cook, manager, lover of the arts and philosophy, world traveler and one of the funniest people I knew.

One of the pearls of wisdom that he gave to me years ago was to “Tend to my garden”.  This was when we were in Italy together passing a beautiful home garden area.  He said “whether its literal or metaphoric, keep focus on the things that nourish you, enrich you and ground you”.   Those words have spoken to me time and time again over the past years and then again this summer as I took it more literally.  Having not been a seasoned gardener, I heard his words as I tried to keep focus on something when I had the distractions of illness and disease right before me.  I was so happy to bring him zucchini and herbs because one of his favorite things to do was cook and eat with his family.  We made it a point up until his last day to eat with him and “break bread together”.

Fashion In The Sand~ SALE Time!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

It is summer sale time! That bathing suit you have been wanting all year is finally more affordable! Don’t waist time, BUY IT! Well try it on first and then buy it. You are all tan and looking beach ready so now is a great time to buy some new sumer pieces and store them for next year. Put them away so when you are wanting to buy something new at full price next spring you will all ready have a little stash of brand new pieces that have been waiting for you all winter long. Even better, buy it now for your winter vacation. I always love to shop sales. I think of it as wise spending. I do the same for the kids and my husband. I know we will be away in a warm place this winter and I know I will want something new. Buying now saves money later. The same as if when you shop and you don’t get a proper bag and shove the item wrapped in tissue in your handbag it is not like shopping at all. You are allowed to come home and tell your husband “But it was 60% off!” So can can walk in the house with the shopping bag announcing to the world you did spend  just a little money. On line has some of the best sales going on now too. J.Crew has great bathing suits for girls. I stocked up on 5 new suits and a dress all for $94!!!! Gap, Old Navy, Children’s Place, Boden, Garnet Hill, Hanna Anderson… The online list is long.
In Montauk I like to shop at Kai Lani right next to Sangha Yoga for lots of great basics. They also have the BEST vegan leather look handbags. Calypso too has some amazing deals from time to time. I always shop their sale rack. A new cashmere sweater always makes a girl happy especially when it is HALF price.
Happy Hunting

Check Out the Montauk Skate Park

Friday, August 6th, 2010

Have you seen the talent at the Montauk Skate Park? These kids (and adults) are serious about boarding and biking!  It is something to see and maybe try…but bring your helmet, it’s required.  I’d say ages 8 and up but I do know a sassy 5 year old that could burn it up there.
The park is open in season from 10am -10 pm.  Bring your kids, it’s not always crowded.  The park closes when it rains. On South Essex- make a left when driving East on Main Street and go up one block….on the left.
