If you are having a birthday party or just company with kids, hire Marianne Ajamy, local artist, for arts and crafts or face painting to add that special touch to any gathering. My girls spent the afternoon with her at Sole last Sunday and had a great time painting picture frames and lady bug rocks. When I came back to get them after brunch, they were squealing with delight at their works of art and didn’t want to leave Marianne. Her warm and loving touch makes children feel special and moms know they are in good hands. You can reach marianne at marianneajamy@gmail.com or 631.741.7419.

Fashion In The Sand- Fall Is Here!!-Well, In Stores That Is
Go Crabbing With The Kids
The other day, a friend of mine invited my girls and I to join her family on a dock at the Montauk Lake Club to go “Crabbing”. I asked how this was done and how the kids could get involved and then her answer was something I had a hard time imagining: “You use chicken legs”…What?
Well I met them on the dock and, low and behold, there the kids were on the dock lowering chicken legs tied onto the end of a string into the water and before I knew it, I heard, “You got one! Ok, hold on…” as an adult carefully helped the child lure the crab back up and then right into a pail of water! The kids were squealing with delight at their bucket of crabs. The best part was that one chicken leg would stay on the string for a while and catch many a crab. Read the rest of this entry »
Know What the Beach Flags Mean
A friend of mine recently asked me where the most kid-friendly beach (with a lifeguard) was and I directed her to Gin Beach off East Lake Drive. It’s on the Sound Side so much calmer waters. Other bonuses are Gin Beach Market and the public restrooms. You do need a beach pass.
If you’re children are good, strong swimmers and like to boogie board, just make sure you stay within the life guard zones specified by the ropes, signs and flags.
It’s also important to know what the different colored flags mean: (Please note: I asked Senior and Seasoned Life Guard, Dick Monahan, about the purple flag because I had never seen one out here in 20 years and he said they do not use that here. People are very seldomly called out of the waters here because of dangerous marine life.)
Fashion in the Sand~ Give Good Gift.
I love to select gifts. I make sure it is something that I would want. Actually more than just want, more like covet. Then I wrap it up in beautiful paper with beautiful ribbon so the receiver can not wait to get at it and I am reluctant to give it up.
Giving good gift is a talent. It reflects the giver, that she knows the receiver well enough to carefully select something that will be appreciated and used. Giving good gift requires time and thought and good shopping skills. The Carriage House in the center of town on the South side of 27 has a gift fit for every one, especially babies and kids. There are the most adorable onesies made of cool white cotton, perfect for a hot summer day for your precious baby. Plush animals, towels, rain boots, PIRATE DRESS UP!!!, unicorns, ponies, art supplies, books and more. Each thing my eyes find is better than the next. I feel as if I am in Good Gift Heaven. If you see a Good Gift but don’t have a receiver BUY IT ANYWAY and put it aside. You will have a party to go to in no time and you may already have your Good Gift hidden away in your special closet (that your kids already know about).
Happy Shopping

How to Treat A Jellyfish Sting
Jelly Fish Season is here already this year. I have seen quite a few while stand up paddle boarding with my 4 1/2 year old on board in the water of Fort Pond Bay. They do not seem to be keeping anyone out of the water with this extreme heat wave. The jellyfish are not lining the beaches and surf right now so do not be too concerned but just be aware of what to do if you or your child should get a sting. I thought the advice on Life Magazine-Family Education was clear and understandable.

Fashion In The Sand- HOT, HOT, HOT
As temperatures climb what to do? Drop the kids off at the Montauk Downs pool (YES, it is open) and head for the wonderfully cool shops that fill Montauk’s town. They are cool AND they are AIR CONDITIONED! I am so happy this summer since there is not one really prevalent trend. You can go Maxi or Mini. Dresses or pants. The one overall trend I do see is a certain “Lady Like” way about most clothes. You can not just throw on an old t-shirt and look hip. Those in the know are taking a certain care and looking like they spent a moment to think about their ensemble. Be comfortable but chic. I found that dressing in something that looks cool and breezy made me feel just a little less like a sweltering, melting mess.
