The swells have been big, the beaches full and the weather is bright and perfect! If you haev been to the ocean beaches over the past week, you know that there have been people talking about rip currents and rip tides. It’s important to know the difference.
An Undertow is a strong backwash off beach caused by big waves crashing on the beach face. It extends 10s of ft from the shore. The water depth could be inches to several feet. The danger is that you could be knocked aroudn by waves. This situation is most dangerous for small children. Escape between breaking waves by walking or crawling up beach.
Rip Currents are strong offshore flows at certain locations. They extend 100s of feet offshore along the south shore of Long Island. They occur in 2-10+ feet. You can be pulled offshore into water over your head. You escape by swimming parallel to beach of let current take you beyond the breakers while floating and then swim diagonally back to shore.
Riptides are strong offshore currents at inlets. They extend 1,000s of feet offshore at Shinneock Inlet in water 10s of feet. One can be pulled far offshore by ebbing or falling tide. You escape by waving for help to attract attention of fishermen or boaters.

Fashion in the Sand- Get Bookish
What better accessory than a REAL book. It will age beautifully. It will always be a reminder of your summer in Montauk. It will look so chic on your coffee table.
The 4th has past and now we are in the true lazy hazy days of summer. What better accessory to carry with you than a book. (Especially since clear hand bags are in style everyone can see how bookish you really are.)Now I do not mean some trashy romance novela found in the super market on a wire spinning rack. I mean a real hard cover with a beautiful dust jacket that you possibly bought just because the picture on the front caught your eye, like a box of candies in a special box just calling your name. You can practically taste how deliciously entranced you will be by the characters waiting inside to be your long lost friends. I have just the treat shop for you to go to. It is the Montauk Bookshop on the circle just 2 doors down from the Bakery. It is slightly set back from the side walk. A beautiful rose garden in front lovingly tended by the land lord. The new owner of this wonderful shop has the same name as I, Perry! But the boys’ spelling of course since he is a boy, well, man. So the shop must be good just based on that alone. ha.
Sudden Tragedy- The Loss Of A Friend
Last Friday my dear friend, Dave Hartstein, passed away suddenly. Cause of death is unknown but it is strongly suspected to have been caused by a virus. Dave was a local community member, beloved husband, father of three and respected chiropractor. He was well known for his kind nature, good wit and intuitive nature to heal.
Friends worked very quickly to set up a foundation and benefit in Dave’s name. If you would like to contribute to Heather Hartstein and family, please make a check out to:
The East End Foundation
PO Box 1746
Montauk, NY 11954
Please make sure make the check out to “The East End Foundation” & write put “Hartstein” in the memo line on the check.
There will be at Fundraising Benefit for the Hartstein Family at Sole East on Friday, July 15th in honor or Dave Hartstein. Details to follow.

5- Reserve a Sunset Dinner with Live Music at Navy Beach so the kids could play on the beach while you dine outdoors.
6- Treat him to his next read at the Montauk Book Shop. Pick up the Times for him there too.
7- Pack the fishing poles and a picnic and head out to the Lighthouse or his favorite fishing spot.
8- Book him some time on the Montauk Downs Golf Course or Down’s Tennis Courts.
9- Head down to Pier Group Men’s Store at Gosman’s and outfit him in some nice new threads.
10- Give him some surfing time and meet him at the Ditch Witch for a yummy breakfast or lunch. Get him a new wet suit at Sunset Surf Shack.
Check Out the Salt Box
Continuing with my crazy retro ideas there is a NEW shop in Montauk called The Salt Box. It is on the same block as Naturally Good, Continental Market and around the corner form Joni’s. I am telling you all this so you know it is in GOOD company. You can shop and eat healthy after – so no guilt. Back to the retro idea. The Salt Box makes screen printed t-shirts for kids and adults. Real OLD FASHIONED screen printing! You can find Tony down stairs in the basement of Salt Box working on silk screens. Just like I learned in high school. They make the screens by hand and push the paint around by hand. No computers doing it for them. Kat is upstairs and can help you find what you are looking for. As well as t-shirts they have a very cool assortment of gifts that are all easy to carry home or great hostess gifts. Such HAND blown water glasses that are thick and sturdy and feel wonderful to hold (You can put a cocktail in them too after 5pm). Please make this shop a definite go see during your stay in Montauk.

Fashion in the Sand Visits “Share With”
Hmmmm… Bell bottoms, now clogs, summer of luuuuvvvvvvv… I must be feelin’ it. I have had enough war, hatred, impolite people, rushing around. I am wearing my clogs and bell bottom and wearing my hair long and free with daisies stuck in here and there. Lettin’ my freak flag fly! So while my flag is flyin’ high I will shop ’til I drop in my CLOGS! I love my clogs. They are perfect for Montauk. You can walk in sand, gravel, rubber chips in playgrounds, through shallow puddles, and on pavement. Kick them off in a moment for an impromptu walk on the beach. Surprisingly people have forgotten that clogs were so hot in the ’70′s. Clogs and Candies. I thought they would change my life if could just wear clogs and Candies every day. And a tube top. Specifically a WHITE tube top and a thin gold belt. Of course I was a pre-teen and did not have to worry about the tube top holding up my boobs. But I digress… You can wear socks or go sockless. They span all seasons. They are a good investment! Tell this to your husband when you get questioned down about needing more shoes. These clogs pictured here are from Share With on Main Street in Montauk. Not too many places have really good clogs with a proper curve to the arch so shop carefully.
