How about a Picnic?

Especially in the warmer months, I often pack a picnic and go hiking or to the beach with my kids. We typically do this in the late morning so we hit the lunchtime hour while out and about. Though there have been those few early mornings that I pack a picnic breakfast and we go to the beach with the whole family, even our dog Blossom. Breakfast favorites are scrambled eggs wrapped in tortillas. I wrap them tightly in foil so the kids can get a bite while keeping the tortilla together. Fresh cut seasonal fruit is also a favorite. And to drink, water in our stainless steel bottles ( www.kidskonserve.com or   www.kleenkanteen.com).

Hike the Seal Haul-Out Trail- See Them Before They Migrate North

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Seals at the seal haulout at the Montauk LighthouseThe seals are getting ready to head north to colder waters in Maine and Nova Scotia.  These adorable (but aggressive- you do not get close) creatures could still be seen on the northern side and about 1 mi. west of the lighthouse.  My favorite way to get there is by taking the Seal Haul-Out Hiking Trail. The trail head is on the north side of 27 East about 1 mile past Deep Hollow Ranch.  This hike could take you a little over an hour in total depending on how long you hang out on the beach. When you get to the end of the trail on the beach you will see a “lean-to” that’s great on windy or rainy days.  You can read and teach your kids about the seals, their habits and habitat!

*This is not a good place for strollers.  My three year old can do it without needing to be carried.  My one year old goes in the child back pack.  So put on your sneakers and sunblock on your faces and enjoy!
